The Keys are a Biblical program helping same-sex attracted, minor-attracted, and transgender (ssa/ma/tx) people draw closer to Jesus and experience victory over temptation.
A note to new visitors:
Throughout this website, you will see the initials ssa, which refers to “same-sex attractions”, ma or maa, which refers to “minor-attractions” or “minor-attracted adults”, and tx, which refers to “transsexuality” or “transgendered”. Although these are separate issues, what is helpful for one group seems to be helpful for the other groups; therefore, the initials are bundled together. Initials are used in order to provide greater privacy for people in high-risk situations where expressing one’s sexual preference would be unsafe.
THE PROGRAM
The Journey to Freedom (Keys) are 40 Bible study lessons, a structured program designed to address the roots of ssa/ma/tx issues. Each Key includes a devotional article to read and also Bible verses and Study Guide questions to think about and respond to. Ssa/ma/tx temptations are viewed as temptations that can be overcome, like any other temptations in a Christian’s life. The Bible tells us that we are slaves of sin until Jesus sets us free (John 8:32-36). The promise made especially to ssa/ma/tx people is found in I Corinthians 6:9-11; the words, “. . . and such WERE some of you . . .” is the banner verse of the modern ex-gay movement. Please read “Outline of the Keys” for further explanation.
A Word to the ssa/ma/tx Person:
If you work this program, very few questions will be asked about your sex life or fantasy life. This program deals with the whole person, including thoughts and attitudes that lead to temptation. The goal is not heterosexuality or any political agenda. The goal is to allow the Holy Spirit to renew your mind (Romans 12:2), to take every thought captive to the Lordship of Christ (II Corinthians 10:5), and to become totally honest with God, Who is gracious and merciful to penitent sinners (Hebrews 2:17-18 & 4:15-16).
You will frequently be referred back to the mercy of God as a free gift. You cannot “clean yourself up” and then approach God. We can only come to Him as we are and let Him clean us up. Only His forgiveness motivates us to confess our sins and consistently resist temptation. Please read “Basic Beliefs” for further explanation.
A Word to the Mentor:
This Bible study makes help available to every ssa/ma/tx person in the world who has a Bible and either a computer or smartphone. A Handbook chapter is linked to each Keys lesson to help you learn to help the overcomer, even if you know very little about ssa/ma/tx issues or how to counsel. If you are a pastor, missionary, campus pastor, Christian counselor, chaplain, or volunteer discipler, and need a resource to help an ssa/ma/tx person who has approached you for help, this program is for you. If you want to start a support group for overcomers in your church, college campus, prison unit, or community, this program is for you. This program can be done one-on-one, in a group, or as a self-study. It can be done face-to-face, by correspondence, or through electronic mail. Please read “How to Use the Keys” for further explanation.
A Word to Those in Restricted Situations:
The Keys lessons with the Handbook chapters can be used as a self-study guide. You might live in an unsafe situation where your attractions can cause legal problems, where it is dangerous to ask for help, or where you do not want your neighbors to know. You can work the program in private and learn to overcome temptation without anyone finding out.
